Accessories finish a build: slings to carry it, weapon lights and lasers for low light, bipods for prone shooting, and the rail sections, QD sockets and covers that hold everything in place. Most mount to M-LOK or Picatinny rails, so check what your handguard uses. For a home-defense AR-15, a weapon light is the accessory most worth adding.

Accessories: common questions
What sling is best for an AR-15?
A two-point sling with a quick adjuster is the most versatile. Single-point slings make transitions easy but let the rifle swing, and QD swivels make it simple to move a sling between rifles.
What should I look for in a weapon light?
Enough output (500 lumens or more) and candela to reach across your home or yard, a mount that fits your rail, and a switch you can reach without moving your grip.
M-LOK or Picatinny accessories?
Buy for the rail you have. M-LOK accessories mount directly to M-LOK slots; Picatinny accessories need a rail section on an M-LOK or KeyMod handguard.
