AR-15 magazines follow the STANAG pattern and work across brands, but material and caliber matter. Polymer magazines like the Magpul PMAG are light, cheap and tough; aluminum USGI magazines with an anti-tilt follower are slim and proven; steel magazines are the most durable. 30 rounds is standard, with 10- and 20-round magazines for prone shooting, hunting and states with capacity limits. 6.5 Grendel, 7.62x39, 9mm and .308 need their own magazines.

Magazines: common questions
Do all AR-15 magazines fit my rifle?
Standard 5.56 STANAG magazines fit nearly all mil-spec AR-15 lowers, though some polymer magazines are tight in certain billet lowers. 9mm, .308 and some other calibers need their own magazines.
Polymer or aluminum magazines?
Polymer magazines such as PMAGs resist dents; aluminum USGI magazines are slimmer and lighter when loaded. Both are reliable, and an anti-tilt follower improves older aluminum magazines.
Can I use 5.56 magazines for 300 Blackout?
Usually yes, especially with supersonic ammo. Heavy subsonic rounds sometimes feed better from 300 Blackout magazines, and clearly marked magazines help keep the two calibers apart.
Are 30-round magazines legal where I live?
Not everywhere: several states limit magazine capacity, usually to 10 or 15 rounds. Check your state's current law before ordering.
