Ammo: common questions
Can I shoot .223 in a 5.56 rifle?
Yes. A 5.56 NATO or .223 Wylde chamber fires both. The reverse isn't safe: 5.56 in a .223 Remington-only chamber can create excess pressure.
What bullet weight should I use?
55 grain is the common, inexpensive training load; 62 grain (M855) is the military standard; and 69 to 77 grain match bullets need a 1:7 or 1:8 twist and shine at longer range.
Is steel-cased ammo OK in an AR-15?
Most AR-15s run steel-cased ammo fine for practice, but it's dirtier and can wear the extractor faster. Brass-cased ammo is more consistent and can be reloaded.
