The stock sets your length of pull and cheek weld. Most AR-15 stocks are adjustable (collapsible): they slide on a carbine buffer tube and adjust for body armor, winter clothing or a smaller shooter. Fixed stocks use the longer rifle buffer system, and precision stocks add an adjustable cheek riser.
Make sure the stock fits your buffer tube: mil-spec and commercial tubes have slightly different diameters, and a stock kit that includes the tube takes the guesswork out. Compare stocks across stores and add one to your build to keep the whole lower in one place.

Stocks: common questions
Mil-spec or commercial buffer tube: which stock fits?
Mil-spec tubes are slightly thinner (about 1.148 inches) than commercial tubes (about 1.168 inches), and most aftermarket stocks are made for mil-spec. Check the stock's listing against your tube.
Can I put a stock on an AR pistol?
Not without ATF approval: a shoulder stock on a firearm with a barrel under 16 inches makes it a short-barreled rifle. Pistols use a brace or a bare buffer tube; the rules for braces have changed several times, so check current guidance.
Does a fixed stock need a different buffer?
Yes. Fixed A2-style stocks use a rifle-length buffer tube, buffer and spring; collapsible stocks use the carbine system.
