Lower Parts

Lower parts are the small pieces that make a stripped lower work: the magazine catch, bolt catch, pivot and takedown pins, safety selector, trigger guard, and their springs and detents. Most builders buy them together as an AR-15 lower parts kit (LPK); single parts are handy for replacing a lost detent or upgrading to an ambidextrous safety or an extended magazine release.
Kits are sold with or without a trigger group and grip, so check what's included before you compare prices. Mil-spec lower parts interchange across brands.

Lower Parts: common questions
What comes in an AR-15 lower parts kit?
Usually the magazine catch and button, bolt catch, pivot and takedown pins with their detents and springs, the safety selector, the trigger guard, and the hammer, trigger and disconnector. Some kits leave out the trigger group or the grip so you can pick your own.
Do I need special tools to install lower parts?
Roll pin punches, a small hammer and a lower vise block make it much easier, and a pivot pin tool (or a 1/4-inch clevis pin) saves a lot of frustration. Our Ultimate AR-15 Build Guide walks through each step with photos.
Are lower parts interchangeable between brands?
Yes, mil-spec AR-15 lower parts share the same dimensions and swap between brands. Billet lowers with built-in or ambidextrous features may need their maker's own parts.
