Short answer: there is no single best AR-15 brand, but there are clear tiers. In our catalog on 20 October 2026, premium makers such as Daniel Defense, Geissele, PWS, POF, Radian and LMT sold complete 5.56 uppers at a median of about $900 to $1,500; mid-tier makers such as CMMG, Spikes Tactical, Faxon, Battle Arms and Rock River Arms sat around $590 to $850; and budget makers such as Luth-AR, ABC, Moriarti and Trybe came in under $500. Price tracks what is built in: check the barrel, the bolt carrier group and the warranty on any brand.
AR-15 brands by price tier

How we built this: for every brand with at least three in-stock complete 5.56 or .223 uppers in our catalog, we took the median of their lowest current prices. Brands with fewer listings that day are not charted. It measures price, not quality, and prices change daily.
What the premium tier usually adds
Premium uppers tend to list features that cost more to make. Geissele's Mk16 URGI upper is sold with a cold hammer forged (CHF) barrel and its REBCG bolt carrier; Daniel Defense describes its barrels as cold hammer forged chrome moly vanadium. Mid-tier and budget uppers more often list nitride-finished barrels, which work well for most shooters. See chrome-lined vs nitride vs stainless barrels.
What to check on any brand
- Barrel steel and finish: 4150 or CMV steel, or 416 stainless; chrome lining or nitride.
- Twist and gas system: 1:7 or 1:8 for most 5.56 loads, with a gas system that suits the barrel length (see barrel profiles and twist rates).
- Bolt carrier group: whether the bolt is magnetic particle inspected (MPI) and high pressure tested (HPT), and the gas key is staked (see the BCG guide).
- What is included: some uppers ship without a bolt carrier group or charging handle, which changes the real price.
- Warranty and support: read the maker's warranty page before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
Who makes the best AR-15?
There is no single best. Premium makers such as Daniel Defense, Geissele, LMT and PWS build with features like cold hammer forged barrels; mid-tier makers such as CMMG, Spikes and Faxon are solid for most shooters.
What are the tiers of AR-15 brands?
By our catalog prices on 20 October 2026: premium around $900 and up for a complete upper, mid around $500 to $900, and budget under $500.
Is a budget AR-15 brand worth it?
It can be for range use. Check the barrel, the bolt carrier group's testing and the warranty, and expect fewer premium features.
Does brand matter more than specs?
No. Barrel steel and lining, twist, gas system and BCG testing tell you more than the logo does.
Why do premium AR-15s cost more?
