Adjustable Gas Blocks: When You Need One and Which to Buy (Live Prices)

Short answer: an adjustable gas block lets you meter how much of the barrel's gas goes back to cycle the action. You need one mainly if you shoot suppressed, where extra gas and blowback are the norm, or if your rifle is over-gassed and harsh. Tune it once with a set screw (the SLR Sentry 7 has 15 positions; the Seekins Low Profile uses a locking set screw), or flip between suppressed and unsuppressed without tools (the Seekins Select has 30 positions and a lever). Match the block to your barrel's gas journal diameter first.

What an adjustable gas block does

Schematic of an AR-15 gas system with an adjustable gas block over the barrel's gas port metering gas down the gas tube to the bolt carrier, and a table of SLR Sentry 7, Seekins Low Profile and Seekins Select adjustable gas block specs

When a bullet passes the gas port, gas flows up into the gas block and back through the gas tube to cycle the bolt carrier (our gas systems explained guide covers the basics). A standard block passes all of it. An adjustable block puts a screw or valve in that path, so you can reduce the gas until the rifle cycles reliably but no harder than it needs to.

When you need one

  • Suppressed shooting. Rugged Suppressors says suppressors increase gas blowback and that an adjustable gas block can make the most difference; Seekins built its Select block so operators could switch between suppressed and unsuppressed without tools. See how suppressors work.
  • An over-gassed rifle. If the rifle throws brass hard and recoils sharply, restricting gas can soften it. A heavier buffer is the other fix; see buffer weights.
  • Load development. Seekins pitches its Low Profile block for tuning to a load.
  • When you probably do not: a standard rifle that cycles well with the ammunition you shoot.

How to choose

  • Size. The block must match your barrel's gas journal: .625, .750, .875 and .936 inch are common. Check with our gas block size guide.
  • Mounting. Set-screw blocks lock into dimples on the barrel; clamp-on blocks clamp around it. SLR recommends its set-screw block under handguards with a 1.3 inch inner diameter.
  • Handguard clearance. A low-profile block must fit under your handguard; Seekins lists 1.35 inch ID and up for the Select.
  • How often you switch. Tune-once set-screw blocks suit one setup; a lever block suits switching a suppressor on and off.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an adjustable gas block?

Mainly if you shoot suppressed or your rifle is over-gassed. A rifle that cycles well with your ammunition does not need one.

How does an adjustable gas block work?

A screw or valve in the block restricts how much gas goes back through the gas tube. SLR's Sentry 7, for example, adjusts the port opening from 0 to 0.125 inch in 15 steps.

Is an adjustable gas block worth it with a suppressor?

Rugged Suppressors says suppressors increase gas blowback and that an adjustable gas block can make the most difference; Seekins' Select switches between suppressed and unsuppressed with a lever.

What size adjustable gas block do I need?

The same diameter as your barrel's gas journal, commonly .625, .750 or .875 inch. See our gas block size guide.

How do I tune an adjustable gas block?

Follow the maker's instructions, and tune with the ammunition and suppressor you will actually use, so the rifle cycles and locks back reliably.

Set screw or clamp-on gas block?

Set-screw blocks lock into dimples in the barrel; clamp-on blocks clamp around it. SLR recommends its set-screw version under 1.3 inch ID handguards.
