AR-15 Stock Kits and Furniture Kits Explained (Live Prices)

Short answer: a complete stock kit is the stock plus the parts it rides on: buffer tube, castle nut, end or latch plate, buffer and buffer spring. Buy one when your lower has no buffer tube yet. A furniture kit is the parts you hold: usually a stock and pistol grip, sometimes a foregrip or handguard, chosen to match. It assumes your tube is already installed. Check the box contents, because makers use the names loosely.

When you need a complete stock kit

A stripped lower has nothing at the back. To fit a collapsible stock you also need the buffer tube, the end or latch plate and castle nut that hold it, the buffer and the spring. A complete stock kit puts all of that in one box; Spike's, for example, ships its M4 stock with a 6-position mil-spec tube, latch plate, castle nut, a 17-7 stainless spring and an ST-T2 heavy buffer. Check the buffer weight suits your rifle with our buffer weights guide, and torque the castle nut to spec (see AR-15 torque specs).

When a furniture kit makes sense

If your lower already has a tube, a furniture kit changes the look and feel: stock, grip and sometimes a foregrip or handguard in one finish. Daniel Defense's combo pairs its collapsible stock, which it says fits mil-spec tubes snugly without a friction lock, with a pistol grip at a 1911-style angle and a vertical foregrip. Match the foregrip to your rail: Daniel Defense says its Picatinny grip does not fit KeyMod or M-LOK, so buy the M-LOK version for an M-LOK handguard (see M-LOK vs KeyMod vs Picatinny).

What to check before you buy

  • Tube diameter. A mil-spec stock needs a mil-spec tube; see mil-spec vs commercial.
  • Tube type. Carbine, rifle and A5 tubes take different stocks and buffers; see buffer tube types.
  • What is actually included. Hogue's grip and stock kit fits a mil-spec tube but does not list one; its assemblies with the tube are separate products.
  • State laws. Some states name telescoping stocks and pistol grips in their rifle definitions; see our featureless AR-15 guide.

Frequently asked questions

What comes in an AR-15 stock kit?

A complete stock kit usually has the stock, buffer tube, castle nut, end or latch plate, buffer and spring. Spike's, for example, includes a 6-position mil-spec tube and an ST-T2 heavy buffer.

What is an AR-15 furniture kit?

A matched set of the parts you hold: usually stock and pistol grip, sometimes a foregrip or handguard. Daniel Defense's set is a stock, grip and vertical foregrip.

Do furniture kits include a buffer tube?

Usually not. Hogue's grip and stock kit, for example, fits a mil-spec tube but does not list one; check the box contents.

Do I need a stock kit for a stripped lower?

Yes, or buy the tube, plate, castle nut, buffer and spring separately. A complete stock kit has them all.

Will a furniture kit fit any AR-15?

The stock must match your tube (mil-spec or commercial, carbine or rifle), and any foregrip must match your rail type.

Can I mix brands instead of buying a kit?

Yes. Any mil-spec stock fits a mil-spec carbine tube, and grips share a standard mount; kits mainly save time and match finishes.
