Vertical vs Angled Foregrips (and the AR Pistol Rule, 2026)

Short answer: a vertical foregrip hangs below the handguard and is held like a second pistol grip; an angled foregrip (such as Magpul's AFG) is a low ramp that puts your hand high, near the bore line, with the thumb over the top; a handstop is just a small stop that marks where your hand goes. On a rifle any of them is fine and it comes down to how you hold the gun. On an AR pistol, ATF long treated a vertical grip as making it an "any other weapon" under the NFA, but since October 9, 2026 ATF does not enforce the NFA for those (checked 20 October 2026). State law still applies, so an angled grip or handstop remains the cautious choice on a pistol.

Vertical foregrips

A vertical grip gives you something to wrap your whole hand around, which many shooters like with gloves or for pulling the rifle in. Short "stubby" versions such as BCM's Gunfighter short vertical grip sit closer to the handguard, and folding versions such as Mission First Tactical's React fold flat.

Angled foregrips

Magpul's AFG is a sloped ramp that, per Magpul's product text as sold by retailers, positions your hand high on the centerline of the bore. It suits the extended-arm, thumb-over-the-handguard grip and adds little height.

Handstops

A handstop is a small bump at the front of the handguard. It gives your hand a consistent forward reference and keeps it off the muzzle end, without adding a grip. Magpul and Battle Arms make M-LOK versions.

The AR pistol rule

The NFA regulations define a pistol as a weapon designed to fire "when held in one hand" (27 CFR 479.11), and the "any other weapon" definition excludes a pistol with a rifled bore. ATF's 2006 open letter, "Adding a Vertical Fore Grip to a Handgun", took the position that a vertical grip means the gun is no longer held in one hand, making it an AOW that needed registration. Later ATF letters reported publicly (for example one dated 30 August 2010) said an angled grip such as the Magpul AFG did not.

Since October 9, 2026, ATF does not enforce the NFA's approval, registration or possession rules for "any other weapons", along with short-barreled rifles and suppressors (see ATF's guidance). ATF says that can change, and state and local laws still apply. See how to build an AR pistol and our SBR guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is a vertical or angled foregrip better?

Neither for everyone. A vertical grip gives a full handhold; an angled grip keeps the hand high and the profile low. Try how you hold the rifle.

Can I put a vertical foregrip on an AR pistol?

ATF long treated it as making an "any other weapon", but since October 9, 2026 it does not enforce the NFA for those. Check your state's law, which still applies.

Is an angled foregrip legal on an AR pistol?

ATF letters reported publicly said an angled grip such as the Magpul AFG does not make a pistol an AOW. State law can differ.

What is a handstop for?

It gives your hand a consistent forward reference point on the handguard without adding a grip.

Do foregrips mount on M-LOK?

Many do directly, such as the Magpul M-LOK AFG and BCM's M-LOK grips; Picatinny versions need a rail section.
