Do AR-10 and AR-15 Parts Interchange?

By Zach ·

Do AR-10 and AR-15 Parts Interchange?

Short answer: partly. The AR-10 is a larger rifle, so the receivers, bolt carrier group, barrel, charging handle, handguard and magazines are AR-10 specific. Many small parts do swap: the trigger group, pistol grip, safety selector, and usually the stock and carbine buffer tube. AR-10s also come in two main patterns (DPMS and ArmaLite), so check the pattern before you buy AR-10 parts.

DPMS vs ArmaLite pattern

DPMS-pattern (LR-308) receivers are the most common and take SR-25-style magazines such as the Magpul PMAG 20 LR/SR. ArmaLite-pattern receivers differ in how the upper fits and in some magazines, so an upper and lower from different patterns may not go together.

Parts that fit

Compare AR-10 lower receivers, triggers and stocks. The builder flags AR-15 parts that won't fit an AR-10 build, and the other way round.

Frequently asked questions

Will an AR-15 trigger fit an AR-10?

Usually yes: most AR-10 lowers use the same small-pin trigger group. Check your lower's pin size.

Can I use an AR-15 bolt carrier group in an AR-10?

No. The AR-10 bolt carrier group is larger and made for .308-size cartridges.

Do AR-15 magazines fit an AR-10?

No. AR-10s use larger magazines, usually SR-25 pattern (such as PMAG 20 LR/SR) on DPMS-pattern rifles.

Will an AR-15 stock fit an AR-10?

Usually, on a carbine buffer tube of the same spec, but the buffer and spring may be AR-10 specific.
