Short answer: for a 16-inch 5.56 AR-15, Daniel Defense and FN cold hammer forged barrels are the hard-use picks; Ballistic Advantage's Classic gives you a chrome-lined CrMoV barrel at a much lower price; Faxon's Match Series (416R stainless, 5R rifling, .223 Wylde) is the accuracy pick; and Diamondback and Rosco cover budget builds. Choose the gas length, twist and muzzle thread for your build first, then the barrel.
16-inch 5.56 barrels compared

Specs are the makers' own, as carried in our stores' listings in October 2026; a dash means the listing didn't say.
What makes a barrel better
- How it's rifled. Daniel Defense and FN cold hammer forge theirs; FN contrasts that with button rifling. Faxon's Match Series uses 5R rifling.
- Steel and bore treatment. CMV or 4150 steel with chrome lining (Daniel Defense, Ballistic Advantage Classic) resists heat and wear; 416R stainless with nitride (Faxon Match) is the usual precision choice. See chrome-lined vs nitride vs stainless.
- Chamber. .223 Wylde, as on the Faxon barrels, safely fires both .223 and 5.56 (see 5.56 vs .223 vs .223 Wylde).
- Twist and profile. 1:7 and 1:8 both stabilize common 5.56 loads; profile trades weight for heat tolerance (see barrel profiles and twist rates).
- Testing. Daniel Defense says its barrels are magnetic particle inspected.
Match it to your build
Check the gas system length (chart), the gas block journal size (Faxon's Match Gunner uses .625 inch; see gas block sizes), and the muzzle thread (thread size chart). The AR-15 builder checks these for you.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best AR-15 barrel?
For hard use, a cold hammer forged barrel such as Daniel Defense's or FN's; for value, Ballistic Advantage's chrome-lined Classic; for accuracy, a 416R stainless match barrel such as Faxon's.
Is cold hammer forged better than button rifled?
Cold hammer forging is the process premium makers such as Daniel Defense and FN use for durable barrels; well-made button-rifled barrels shoot well too.

1:7 or 1:8 suits most 5.56 loads, including heavier bullets.
Should I get a .223 Wylde barrel?
If you shoot both .223 and 5.56 and want precision, yes; it is built to fire both safely.
